Ascendant or Lagan.

Astrology is a powerful tool and can be used as a search light in our journey to our own Being. There are 12 zodiac signs and each one has some characters peculiar to it. Natives born in any one of these naturally exhibit those characters. There are 12 boxes in the horoscope and these are called houses.

Readers can open their horoscope and see this chart. The first box at the top is called the ascendant or lagan. The number written in it represents the zodiac sign of the ascendant. For example if number 1 is written, it means that the person is an Aries ascendant. This house talks about the physical aspect of the body i.e. body built, complexion, height, facial expression, longevity, self, health, vitality, it governs the face and the head. There are many other aspects associated with the first house but the above stated are the most important. Ascendant means that particular zodiac sign which appeared on the horizon when the native was born.

Zodiac signs are seen as a group of stars making a particular shape. Usually the name of the zodiac sign is according to the shape formed. Any of the 12 zodiac signs can occupy the first house. Hence the ascendant can be :

Aries,Taurus,Gemini,Cancer,Leo,Virgo,Libra,Scorpio,Sagittarius,Capricorn,Aquarius and Pisces.

Let us examine each ascendant one by one.

1. Aries: -

A native is an Aries ascendant if number 1 is written in the first house. The shape associated with it is of a ram. Hence the native can be seen having prominent characters of this animal. The lord of Aries is Mars and this makes the native fiery, masculine and hot tempered.

Physical Aspect:-Native is medium to tall in height and slim.Possibility of a mark on the face.Face is round,complexion is wheatish. Native is easy to anger,somewhat aggressive,bold and is independent and progressive in thought and action.He is a natural leader,is stubborn and possesses an impressive personality.He has a changeable mind and may be a rebel in adolescent years.He is very focused and will definitely achieve what he sets his eyes

Mental Makeup:-Aries lagna natives are independent ,courageous and sensitive.Their challenge being impulsiveness. They are lovers of beauty and art.

Health Aspect:-According to medical astrology Aries governs the head, brains and nervous system. If afflicted, diseases of these parts are seen.

Sun is exalted and Saturn is debilitated in Aries. Jupiter is a yogkarak planet for Aries.

The above results are seen in all Aries ascendants when the house is vacant of any other planet. The presence of other planets in this change the results such as:-

1. If Sun is placed in 1st house in Aries it makes the native Active, Intelligent, famous, wealthy, warrior, ambitious and impulsive. 2. If Moon is placed in the 1st house in Aries it makes native fond of travelling, sores in the head, fickle minded, restless, enterprising. 3. If Mars is placed in the first house in Aries the native is skillful, an Organizer, commanding, rich, inspiring, combative in nature. 4. If Mercury is placed in Aries in 1st house it makes the native materialistic, clever, greedy, impulsive and fond of speculation. 5. If Jupiter is placed in the 1st house in Aries it makes the native powerful, wealthy, prudent, sympathetic, firm and harmonious in nature. 6. If Venus is placed in the 1st house in Aries it makes the native extravagant, active, dreamy, idealist, proficient in fine arts.

7. If Saturn is placed in the 1st house in Aries it makes the native miserable, having strained relations with spouse and other relatives, unsuccessful and vain.

8. If Rahu or Ketu are placed in the 1st house in Aries it makes the native blessed with respect, wealth, high rank in life, vehicles and good luck.
