Astrology has been designated the status of superstitious belief system.The neo-scientists have referred to it as a pseudoscience.As a result this sacred science has suffered a lot of criticism. In ancient times, this was practiced as any other system to help mitigate the sufferings of the people.It made use of several techniques and parameters to arrive at a diagnosis. Over the time this tradition like many other lost its glory and got confined to some families.They guarded it well and did not allow it propagate.This resulted in a rigid application of the study and it lost its objectivity.The failure of the astrologer became the failure of the system. In my opinion if it is studied with an open mind and a scientific temperament,it can prove to be a valuable guidance in the journey of life.

Nakshtras- Constellations

The root “naksh” in the term nakshtra means to approach or attain or worship and the suffix “tra” means the instrument to do the same. In Vedic times nakshtras were defined as the means to connect with the cosmic powers and extend our human mind to the cosmic mind .Nakshtras are said to dispense the fruits of Karma and the highest of karma is the fruits of our meditation, worship and spirituality. This is their most important role .To this day the rituals and other worship is done when Moon is in the favourable nakshtras and the unfavourable nakahtras are remedied. Nakshtras are of prime importance in ascertaining the muhurata for various functions. The term nakshtra is commonly mentioned in the Rig Veda and Yajur Veda.Nakshtras are named after the Vedic ruling deities like Indra ,Agni, Soma etc.Nakshtra also means something that never decays.

The earth revolves around the Sun in an elliptical path called as the “ecliptic”..We assume an imaginary belt extending about 8 degrees North to 8 degrees South of the ecliptic and is about 16 degrees wide. This imaginary belt is called zodiac in which all planets revolve in their respective orbits. This zodiac is divided into 12 equal parts of 30 degree each(360/12) --- these are called “zodiac signs” that is why we have 12 zodiac signs. There is another way of dividing the zodiac- into 27 equal parts called as the constellations or nakshtra of 13:20’ each .Multiplying this with 27 gives 360 degrees the entire zodiacal belt . Each nakashtra has a a rich mythology and powerful deities that reside in them. Astrology draws heavily on mythology. By exploring the myths and the archtypes the constellations are brought to life .The Atharva Veda and the Yajur Vedas give complete lists of them and associate them with old Vedic deities .By befriending the particular god or goddess of a given nakshtra healing becomes possible .Each nakshtra has a particular power or Shakti which is the power of the deity residing in that nakshtra. Each nakshtra is male or female and also rajas, tamas and satwic in nature .A specific animal ,sex ,caste,temperament ,primary motivation such as dharma(life-purpose),artha (wealth) ,kama (fulfilment of desire) and moksha (enlightenment) is reflected through each nakshtra. Each sign occupies 2 and a quarter constellation. As there are nine planets , a group of 3 constellations fall under the lordship of each planet .Because the constellation is a part of the sign ,therefore, it is under the influence of two planets ,namely the sign lord and the constellation lord .The constellation of the natal moon , sun and the ascendant is very important in the life of an individual.
